While Kivio mp comes with over 30 useful stencil sets with which you can create diagrams and flowcharts, you may need a particular stencil type that isn't available. But fear not -- you can use the Kivio Stencil Builder to easily and intuitively create vector-based images for use as Kivio stencils. Stencils created with the Kivio Stencil Builder are compatible with both Kivio mp and the Kivio component of KOffice for KDE.

The Kivio Stencil Builder is available as a separate product from Kivio mp.

The Kivio Stencil Builder requires Sketch: an interactive vector drawing program for Linux and other UNIX-compatible systems. It is intended to be a flexible and powerful tool for illustrations, diagrams and other purposes. It will allow you to draw complex shapes for later use as stencils in Kivio. It will help you to simply draw the objects you will want to use as stencils. If you don't already have Sketch on your system, you can download the relevant packages from here.

Included software

The Kivio Stencil Builder package consists of the following:

1. .sml export filter: after graphically building the shapes, they have to be converted into XML code. The export filter does this job with a minimum of information from the user. You will not have to write a single line of code by yourself, the filter will simply translate the graphical information you put in Sketch into the right code to feed Kivio. As simple as a "Save as..." action.


2. User guide: It will guide you in the filter's installation process, and give you useful hints about how to set connection points, text fields and others in the stencil, and also the specifications for the stencil's icons.

Sell us your stencils

If you create a great stencil for Kivio mp, you can even sell it back to us and we'll include it in future releases of Kivio mp. Just register for the Kivio Stencil Developer Program.
