Team Diagram/SQLProject/Data Architect

Workspace

The Workspace has been improved upon. The Workspace works differently than v2.0.0 as it now saves only itself. In v2.0.0 the entire workspace was saved to a single file but in v2.1.0 the Workspace file is simply a container. This means that other data is inherently exported and can be used in multiple workspaces at the same time. Furthermore, the application always has a single workspace. This is much more in-line with the way many other applications handle a workspace.

Project

This version introduces a Project container which can be used to organize files. The Project in SQL Project and Data Architect contains the connection -- all files located within this Project automatically inherit this connection.

Data Architect

Documentation

This version of Data Architect includes an online help facility called tkHelp. tkHelp is availible from the Data Architect Help menu. Executing this option will invoke the improved documentation.

Output

The Output window has been greatly improved. The Output window now contains a Quick Find tab, Generation messages, Reverse engineering messages, and ODBC messages. Many of these output messages can be single-clicked to bring the relevant item into focus on the editor and double-clicked to invoke the editor for the item.

DB2

A new Physical Model has been added to support IBM's DB2.

15 November 2001: Release Version 2.0.0

Data Architect v2.0.0 has been released today. This version of Data Architect has many improvements over previous versions:

Sessions

Prior versions of Data Architect contained an Advanced SQL Editor where one can edit and execute SQL statements. This version extends the concept to a complete Session. Configure each session for auto-login, maximum history items and more.

Integrated Data Source Managment

Create, Delete and Configure access to a Data Source. Easily browse Data Sources to see what; tables, views, etc are in the Data Source.

Workspace

A Workspace contains a collection of Models and Sessions. The Models and Sessions can be Imported/Exported but are typically saved in the Workspace itself.

Enhanced User Interface

Data Architect is now based upon the Multiple Document Interface (MDI) concept to allow many models and sessions to be open at the same time. Panner, Browser and Output windows are dockable and can be hidden. Window layout is automatically saved/restored.

Improved Installation

The Windows version installs using a setup.exe and the Linux version uses native packaging such as RPM files.

Major Bugs Addressed

  • printing the model (now more than two pages)

  • progress feedback during long queries (implemented)

5 November 2001: Release 2.0.0?

Signs of version 2.0.0 are starting to purcolate to the surface. First the Alpha 1 release and now the Beta 1 release. Please try out the latest release and give us some feedback.

We have not addressed all of your 2.0.0 suggestions... yet. Our primary concern right now are in regard to the installation and other platform variables.

14 October 2001: Sneek Peek

A lot of effort has gone into v1.3.6. In fact the User Interface alone has been improved so much that we have decided to make the next release a 2.0 Preview release.

Here are a couple of screenshots (sneek peeks):

29 September 2001: Mac OS X

Several fix releases have gone out and Version 1.3.6 is in the works. The first peek at the Mac OS X version is coming. Data Architect runs on the Mac OS X using Qt v3 Beta1 and it crashs frequently so we can not really release it yet...but we may put it out just so people can see it. We are following Trolltech's Qt releases very closely... usually getting out new versions of Data Architect within 24 hours of a new Qt release.

9 September 2001: Release Version 1.3.2

The last release (1.3.1) was a bug fix release. This release includes some bug fixs and several improvements:

  • PostgreSQL models now support Views, Sequences, and Inherit Tables

  • ODBC models are now based upon SQL92 and support Views

Expect the next version (in about 7 days) to include:

  • reverse-engineer inherit tables

  • reverse-engineer views

  • improved model validation

  • many refinements

Something which may not be so obvious is that the code has been reorganized and cleaned up in preparation for special support for DB2 (future release) and a Macintosh version (a couple more weeks).

28 August 2001: Release Version 1.3.0

The plan was to get 100% of PostgreSQL support done for this release but the Linux World show in San Francisco caused that to be pushed back. However, this release does contain much better PostgreSQL support and better ODBC support. These are some of the highlights:

  • reverse-engineering for foreign keys

  • syntax highlighting in the Advanced SQL Editor

  • use of the PostgreSQL catalog tables

The next release will likely be a bug-fix release (probably 3 September 2001) and include more PostgreSQL support such as sequences, views and inherited tables.

17 August 2001: List Server

A list server has been setup. Subscribe by sending an email to majordomo@thekompany.com with "subscribe da@thekompany.com YourEmailAddress" in the body. Please join the mailing list and post questions and requests.

16 August 2001: Release Version 1.2.1

Now supports the following MySQL specific features:

  • all CREATE TABLE options

  • all CREATE INDEX options

  • column options such as UNSIGNED, BINARY, ZEROFILL

  • SET and ENUM value lists

  • reverse-engineering including table options and value lists

Other features:

  • create subset of objects

  • optional create/drop database

  • optional drop table

  • improved model validation

  • improved handling of fonts

10 August 2001: Release Version 1.2.0

This release contains quite a few fixes, changes and enhancements. Most of these are driven by the way Data Architect handles database specific features.

Prior versions extracted database specific features from ODBC drivers and stored them in an internal database. This is no longer the approach used by Data Architect. The new approach is to use plug-ins to support database specific features. This version comes with three plug-ins:

  • MySQL

  • PostgreSQL

  • ODBC

Most of MySQL and PostgreSQL features are supported. These will be expanded for the next release. The ODBC plug-in is used to provide 'generic' support.

Expect support for other databases in future releases. In the meantime, users of other databases can use the ODBC plug-in and manually type in column data types, etc.

15 July 2001: Release Version 1.0.0

It's official - theKompany and CodeByDesign have come to an agreement to co-develop and market Data Architect. This has the immediate effect that anyone will now be able to buy the first version of Data Architect now at theKompany.com.

This release contains a Linux version and a Preview version for MS Windows.

CodeByDesign will be stepping up efforts to polish existing features in Data Architect and work agressively to add planned features for the next version. Version 2 is expected to follow Trolltech's release of Qt 3 (probably in September).

26 June 2001: Win Version

  • Now on MS Windows platforms (see screenshots).

  • Web site to be moved as product nears roll-out.

26 June 2001: 1.1b Released

  • Next unixODBC release will support an automatic install of the text file driver. No need to setup this driver before running Data Architect. This is currently in unixODBC cvs.

  • unixODBC v2.0.8 just released. This contains the text file driver required by Data Architect.

  • Now relies upon ODBC text file driver being called 'TXT' (was 'Text File').

  • Fixed a few bugs in the Advanced SQL Editor which prevented selected text from being found properly (i.e. to run-selected).

25 June 2001: 1.0b Released

  • more model validation added

23 June 2001: 1.6a Released

  • object browser added to left of main window

  • output window docked along bottom of main window

  • feature freeze in prep for beta release

21 June 2001: 1.5a Released

  • more information on Data Dictionary report

20 June 2001: 1.4a Released

  • several minor enhancements

  • no longer statically linked (must have Qt installed)

  • no longer uses Qt Beta 3 (this fixed a few bugs)

18 June 2001: 1.3a Released

  • some model validation in place

  • output can be double-clicked to jump to offending object

17 June 2001: 1.2a Released

Development has been with MySQL. This release is a result of some testing with PostgreSQL.

16 June 2001: 1.1a Released

This is a sneak peek at what is to come. This release is Alpha but contains these enhancements over previous versions:

  • output windows (see the details)

  • set fonts

  • set font justification

  • set line color

  • panner window (quickly navigate large ERDs)

  • zoom

  • mouse over objects shows name (great when zoomed in)

  • common query short cuts, such as table and column list, in Advanced SQL Editor

  • DBMS features auto registered via ODBC and a local cache

09 June 2001: 1.0a Released

This is a sneak peek at what is to come. This release is very Alpha but contains these useful features:

  • ERD in the fashion of Power Designer

  • Advanced SQL Editor

  • Reverse Engineer a Database (simple)

  • Create Database (simple)
